"If You Were with Me Now" is a song by Kylie Minogue from fourth studio album Let's Get to It (1991). Written and produced by Mike Stock and Pete Waterman, the song features American R&B singer Keith Washington.

The song was released as the second single from the album in October 1991 due to a favourable reaction from radio stations and reached number four in the UK and the top ten in Ireland and South Africa as well as the top thirty in Australia. The song is Kylie's first hit single to feature her as a co-writer.

Both Kylie and Washington recorded their vocals at separate times at Stock Aitken and Waterman's studio in London. Subsequently, the two had not met until the music video filming. Curiously, at no moment of the video do they appear together, and there are no obvious signs that the scenes of each of them were recorded at the same location.

Background and release[]

Plans for a US release of "If You Were with Me Now" were considered, but they had to be scrapped as Kylie didn't really have a US label at the time. Also the song originally was named "One Love At a Time" before any involvement with Keith Washington. The song was chosen to be the follow-up single to "Word Is Out" in place of the originally planned follow-up "Finer Feelings", which was eventually released as the fourth single from Let's Get to It, due the poor reception to "Word Is Out".

Critical reception[]

Digital Spy's Nick Levine called the track a "slushy duet." Writing Kylie's biography for her special on Australian music video programme Rage, they called the song one of the "richly beautiful ballads."

Lyrics[]

Without you standing by my side
Love and good fortune passes me by
And you were my guiding light
It seemed so easy
When we said goodbye

How different would the world be now
If only we had worked it out somehow
What kind of fools are you and I
There would be stars up in the sky
If you were with me now

And I know I may go astray
But who's to say that we can't change our mind
My love burns stronger each day
If I'm sure of one thing

One love at a time
How could we throw our love away
When we had so much more than words can say
The darkest clouds would fade away
To bring the light into my day
If you were with me now

If loving you is right
Then turn back the hands of time
I'd do anything to make you mine
There's nothing that I wouldn't do
I could make you feel my love for you
If you were with me now
If you were with me now
If you were with me now
